How to knit a summer top

Hello my beautiful, today I’ll show you my new top that I’ve made for my holidays on Cyprus, but it become my favorite top for the summer.

It’s a very simple top, perfect for beginners, if you only know to knit and purl (stockinette stitch) this pattern is perfect for you.

It’s a perfect project for scrap yarn. I’ve made this top from cotton, I only had one ball of green cotton (I used it for the back) and one ball of turquoise cotton (I used it for the front).

I’ve made this top a little bit large, so the pattern is for L size, but if you are like me and you like to wear one or two size larger, this top it will fit you well even you are a S size. And if you ask me the straps are a little bit long, but my husband loves it  this way.

You will need:

200 g cotton yarn (use your favorite brand);

3,5 mm needles;

3,5 mm hook if you want to make a border;

Scissors.

Back panel:

Cast on 100 stitches:

The first 6 rows I’ve knitted the seed stitches. Below I’ll leave you the youtube tutorial for the seed stitch, and for the stockinette stitch, hit “play” if you need to learn it:

Row 1: *knit 1, purl 1*, repeat *-*;

Row 2: *purl 1, knit1*, repeat *-*;

Row 3: repeat row 1;

Row 4: repeat row 2;

Row 5: repeat row 1;

Row 6: repeat row 2;

Row 7: knit all stitches;

Row 8: purl all stitches.

Repeat from row 7 until you reach the desired length, I’ve made mine 40 cm long.

Now it’s time to make the portion where your arms go:

Cast off the first 12 stitches at the beginning of the row, knit the rest of the stitches. Repeat on the next row, but now you will purl the rest of the stitches because you are on the wrong side.

The next row: cast off 4 stitches at the beginning of the row,  knit the rest of the stitches. Repeat on the next row, but now you will purl the rest of the stitches because you are on the wrong side.

The next row: cast off 3 stitches at the beginning of the row,  knit the rest of the stitches. Repeat on the next row, but now you will purl the rest of the stitches because you are on the wrong side.

The next row: cast off 2 stitches at the beginning of the row,  knit the rest of the stitches. Repeat on the next row, but now you will purl the rest of the stitches because you are on the wrong side.

The next row: knit together 2 stitches at the beginning of the row,  knit the rest of the stitches. Repeat on the next row, but now you will purl the rest of the stitches because you are on the wrong side.

Make the next 4 rows in stockinette stitch. Knit 8 stitches and cast off until you have 8 stitches left on your needle. Your straps are beginning with these 8 stitches.

Now you will knit the straps in stockinette stitch (knit on the wright side, purl on the wrong side) for 40 rows, but you can make them just for 25-30 rows. Cast off.

Frontal panel:

Cast on 100 stitches.

Begin working like you did on the back panel until you finish the portion where the arms go. Now you are going to take the stitches that you have on your needle and divide them on two: leave one side on the cable and the other on your needle.

Start with what side you want: cast 16 stitches, knit the rest of the stitches, purl the wrong side. Cast off 3 stitches and knit the rest of the stitches, purl the wrong side. Cast off 2 stitches and knit the rest of the stitches, purl the wrong side. Knit 2 stitches together and knit the rest of the stitches, purl the wrong side. Repeat the last 2 rows.

Now you have 8 stitches for the strap, knit it like the ones on the back panel.

Do the same with the other side (the one on the cable).

Because I love to crochet, I’ve crocheted a simple border: 3 rows of single crochet.

Sew together the 2 panels on the wrong side, sew together the straps too.

You can wash it by hand or in a washing machine at 30 degrees, and block it (if you used cotton you can iron it).

Now you can enjoy your new summer top.
